Community Building for Environmental Justice

Presented by Rachel Kiser, MPH, Melissa Garcia, and Gerold Dermid, MBA.
This panel presentation provides an overview of environmental justice and its connection to community building and positive health outcomes. Participants will learn about two projects addressing environmental justice needs in communities in Texas and Nevada with implications for research and practice. The session will also provide insights from WEST EJ, a regional technical assistance and capacity-building provider of the EPA, that assists with community action on environmental justice issues through opportunities for community-responsive projects and grants. Transforming Narratives in Public Health

The Nevada Public Health Institute (NPHI) has received funding from County Health Rankings & Roadmaps to strengthen state networks through strategic partnerships. This funding begins discussions in transformative narratives to address health equity in rural Nevada. Narratives are the values-based themes of stories that we use to understand our world. A narrative communicates and reinforces a worldview and engages people in considering their own understanding of the world. Just what are narratives? How are they created? Why is it important to transform them?

County Health Rankings

The County Rankings provide a snapshot of local health data that demonstrate where people live influences how well they live and how long they live. The Rankings allow each state to see how its counties compare on a range of factors that influence health, including education, access to health and mental health care, the physical environment, social and economic factors, smoking, access to healthy foods and more. In 2024, seven new actionable measures were introduced for local communities to consider.

The Health Officer Association of California (HOAC) represents the physician health officers appointed by the local governments in California’s 58 county and 3 city health jurisdictions.
